The population in Moonee Valley has recently undergone demographic changes. With the erection of medium and high density apartment style living in the area compared to the traditional single dwelling homes which until recently made up over 80 per cent of the area. 

 

With this change, has come the influx of young and family nesters with an above average income.  The most relevant socio-economic characteristics of the trade (ABS: Census 2006) area include:

 

1.       Primary trade area population of 38,030 with a total estimated trade area population of

         107,090

 

2.      The average age of the trade area is 37 years which is also in-line with the Australian average of 37 years and the age structure of the trade area residents indicate a large proportion of the population aged in the 25-54 year bracket (44%) which consists of young singles/couples and families.

 

3.      26.6% of the Moonee Valley population were born overseas and 65.9% were born in Australia. Italian born population is the next highest grouping at 5.6%

 

4.      62.0% are employed full time of which 68.8% are white collar and 22.6% are blue collar, with 8.3% being community based workers. The average median household income is $1,066 per week compared to the Australian average of $1,027 per week (13% increase). However, average monthly home loan repayments are $200 more than the national average, leaving disposable income at around $50 per week below the national figure.

 

5.      Households within the trade area sector are characterised by a higher than average representation of couples families with children (46.5%) and one parent families (15.2%).
